Diamond blades and drill bits operate by making smooth contact with the surface which is softer than diamonds. The cutting action is a scratching action not a gouging action.
If you are breaking segments or ripping them off their attachments you are probably applying too much pressure or not holding them steady in there turning motion.
It is always preferable to lubricate the cutting area. Water is usually the lubricant used and if your equipment is not supplied with a water applicator you may use a hand held old water bottle with one of those closable nozzles to intermittently spurt water on the appropriate area.
